Why?

♫Look how we are making
Filled with so much hatred
Such a tired game….♫
I blast Pink’s song from the radio
as news of all the latest burrowed my brain
and exploded my heart; insane.
Who planted that seed of hatred?
Or was it nestled in your heart
at birth?  Nature or nurture?
The blood is red, all our blood is red.
Human sacrifice, innocent lives-
today a penny has more value,
And was the void filled
with that last person you killed?
That answer shall never be known;
you’re an empty vessel, now that
you’ve also taken your own.
What whispered the violence
into your soul, why did you think
this would make you feel whole?
And what of those left behind-what
to do after the blood has dried?
Were you looking for acceptance;
Was it your pride?
Hate has been around for far too long,
Nazism, racism, cataclysms…
hiding in the mind like aneurysms.
Is our society at fault for all this mess?
Is it our fault we're soaked in death?
♫Change the voices in your head
Make them like you instead…♫
On the radio, Pink’s song ends.

**the news has pounded at my spirit today, it's been a tragic day, and it's hard not to get angry.  Today alone, there has been three separate shootings...one in VA, two in NC...and each incident has innocent victims dead-two of which were police officers...and all three shooters committed suicide.  Over Thanksgiving, not too far from where I live, a 36 yr old mom woke up one morning and went on a shooting rampage.  She shot and killed her three sons, her niece, and her nephew, shot the man she was having an affair with, and then killed herself.  What on earth could have been going through her mind?  I had never met her nor walked in her shoes, so I have no idea.  But what a horrible tragedy...so many victims, those dead and alive.

** linking up to dVerse tonight...the prompt is emotion, and today has been nothing but. and the song I quoted lyrics from was Pink's "F'ing Perfect"  listen here

  2. you never know what's going on inside their head... often the attackers are also victims of their own lives, a horrible childhood, things that went wrong..i wish we would manage to help them before that dam bursts... like brian i like how you wrapped it around the song..

  3. It's sad that the media has focused on these stories so much that people copycat... when shooting someone should NEVER be an option. Great piece, Caty!

  7. It is agony to think of lives wasted by the selfish bullets of others. Your poem is an outcry against so many injustices.

  9. It's just a pity! The sad thing is that why kill before suicide? Hate cannot be explained!

  10. What can be said? What we don't know?? Of this, I feel so sure, there be a force for good in this world. Does that mean there is a force for evil? It would seem.

    What tragedies. What sorrow.

All I can hope is for PEACE!
